The History of the French Foreign Legion by David Jordan

Take an inside look into the history of one of the world's most enigmatic military forces: the French Foreign Legion.

Using an aggressive and arduous training program, The French Foreign Legion has turned itself into one of the world's elite forces, a status it has continually maintained in battles of extraordinary courage and bloodshed. Yet it remains mysterious, the stuff of legends and Hollywood movies. History of theFrench Foreign Legion reveals the reality behind this compelling unit, from its participation in the conquest of Algeria in the 1840s to its role in the war against terrorism today. Illustrated with 120 images, this absorbing study explores the ascetic lifestyle of a legionnaire, with firsthand accounts of training and punishments; dispels myths about joining the Legion, and describes in detail the recruitment and selection process. Chapters on specialist training discuss the Legion soldiers' technical and tactical excellence as well the units' superb equipment and weaponry. This book is a fascinating journey into a military world that is almost unique in the history of men-at-arms.
Jordan, David: - David Jordan writes fiction and poetry. David's poem Portal featured in International Poetry's Top 100 Poems of 2017. Born in former Yugoslavia during wartime, David's earliest memories consist of his family fleeing from his native country just to survive. Needless to say, this made a great impression on him and contributed to his perception of the world. He moved with his mother and father to Sydney, Australia in December of 1996 at just five years old. David rapidly learned the English language and became obsessed with all things sci-fi, fantasy and magic. Quickly becoming consumed by the Star Wars and Harry Potter universes - while very firmly being a truth hunter due to his experience in Yugoslavia - he knew that one day, he wanted to live in magical worlds just like that. They had to be real. He was sure of it. Well, he grew up and realised the next best thing; if they didn't exist, at least he could create them, however he liked. And create he did.
