Hog Fever by Richard La Plante

A biker describes his experiences with the Hell's Angels and the Forbes 500 on his journey between King's Road, London, and New Mexico, and describes how he endured all kinds of weather and personally customized his motorcycle.

Richard La Plante began his professional career as a special education teacher in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he entertained his kids by playing the guitar and writing songs. Following his dismissal, he established the rock band Revenge and toured and recorded until egos collided and noses were broken. His first book, Tegne, Soul Warrior, a fantasy-fiction novel, blended his longstanding study of Japanese martial arts with his interest in metaphysics and love of adventure tales. He subsequently went from fantasy-fiction to hardcore punk. Mantis was the first book in the series, and it was followed by Leopard, Steroid Blues, and Mind Kill. A large portion of the proceeds from his writings went toward the chrome and steel accoutrements that graced his custom Harley-Davidson, a 1989 Springer, an obsession that inspired his motorcycle memoir, Hog Fever. Detours, published in 2002, continues the motorcycle theme by tracing a single cross-country journey that culminates in Sturgis, South Dakota's legendary motorcycle gathering. Richard and his second wife, Betina, an excellent photographer and mother of his two sons, constructed their first home from the ground up on a cliff overlooking Gardiner's Bay in East Hampton, New York, in 2004. In 2005, the family relocated to Ojai, a small hamlet in the high desert of Southern California, where they built their ideal home on a hilltop, which inspired his current novel, Never Again: Building the Doctor. Anything paranormal, western boxing, and competitive swimming are among Richard's other passions.
