Under the Whaleback won the 2002 George Devine Award and Honeymoon Suite has been awarded the 2003 Pearson New Play of the Year Award. A production of Honeymoon Suite by the English Touring Theatre opens at the Royal Court Theatre in January 2004, followed by a regional tour.

From 1989 until 1994, Richard Bean worked as a stand-up comedian before becoming a writer and performer on the sketch program. His first full-length drama, Of Rats and Men, was presented at the Canal Café and then toured to Edinburgh. It was nominated for a Sony Award after he adapted it for radio for the BBC. England People Very Lovely and The Mentalists are two of Richard Bean's past pieces.
