Honeymoon Suite by Richard Bean

"You love someone, you can feel it, like a lump, summat you carry around with yer. Bloody hell, it's either there or it int, like a hat." If Romeo and Juliet had lived, would their marriage have survived? How long? Ten years? Twenty? Fifty? How would the union have coped with poverty, corruption, his ignorance, her aspiration, an ungrateful daughter, no sons, infidelity with an attractive bloke on an evening class, God knows how many miscarriages and even murder? Honeymoon Suite is Richard Bean's third play at the Royal Court following Toast and Under the Whaleback. All Richard Bean's plays - including Smack Family Robinson and The God Botherers are published by Oberon Books. Under the Whaleback won the 2002 George Devine Award and Honeymoon Suite has been awarded the 2003 Pearson New Play of the Year Award. A production of Honeymoon Suite by the English Touring Theatre opens at the Royal Court Theatre in January 2004, followed by a regional tour.

From 1989 until 1994, Richard Bean worked as a stand-up comedian before becoming a writer and performer on the sketch program. His first full-length drama, Of Rats and Men, was presented at the Canal Café and then toured to Edinburgh. It was nominated for a Sony Award after he adapted it for radio for the BBC. England People Very Lovely and The Mentalists are two of Richard Bean's past pieces.
