Garry Ryan worked in Calgary Public Schools for a little more than thirty years. Queen's Park, his debut Detective Lane novel, was published in 2004. The Lucky Elephant Restaurant, the second, got a Lambda Literary Award in 2007. A Hummingbird Dance, Smoked, and Malabarista are the other three books in the series that he has published since. Ryan received the Calgary Freedom of Speech Award in 2009. The novel Blackbirds is the first in a series.
