In Liberian refugee ministry in Ivory Coast, Kim's resolve to care for all the needs surrounding her almost broke her from the inside out. Bitterness and helplessness settled into her heart like toxic fumes. After a year, the missionary team took a refocusing trip to the states, and it was there that Kim hit a wall. She felt she could not return to West African ministry. An engrossing two-year interim ministry in Jamaica was on the docket a ministry of healing and encouragement. Finally ready to return to West African ministry, the Abernethys moved to a town in western Ivory Coast. Still ministering to Liberian refugees, the following years saw fruit beyond anything they could imagine. The last riveting five years of African ministry found Kim stretched beyond her human capacity. A straightforward chronicle of God's amazing grace in the midst of our humanness.
