The Israeli Holocaust Commission recognized Irene Gut Opdyke (1922-2003) one of the Righteous Among the Nations, a distinction granted to people who risked their lives by assisting and saving Jews during the Holocaust. In a ceremony at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, she was awarded the Israel Medal of Honor, Israel's highest honor. She received a special praise from the Pope. Her tale is featured in the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.'s permanent exhibit.
