Insects by Michael Chinery
Insects are endlessly fascinating creatures. The images in this book afford the reader a rare and intimate glimpse of their almost alien world and include information on all aspects of their lives from their lifecycle and habitats to the amazing ingenuity of their defence tricks, whilst rarely seen up close and personal views taken with electron scanners highlight the intricacy and complexity of these tiny beings. The superb colour photographs cover a myriad of species from every corner of the globe - from searingly hot deserts to steamy rainforests, shady woodlands to meandering rivers and the informed text accompanies each photograph reveals something new about these tiny, intricate creatures and how their seemingly unimportant existence actually plays a vital role in the world on a large scale.
Michael Chinery is the UK's leading writer on insects. After studying zoology, geology, botany and anthropology at Cambridge, he went on to work in the editorial department of Animals, what is now BBC Wildlife. He has travelled extensively throughout France and also to more exotic locations such as Greenland, Namibia and Tanzania. He has had several television appearances and was a regular member on BBC Radio 4's Wildlife panel for many years. He is the author of many books, several of them prize-winning, including A Field Guide to the Insects of Britain and Northern Europe (Collins 1973), Collins Guide to the Insects of Britain and Western Europe (Collins 1986), Attracting Wildlife to Your Garden (Collins 2004) and Complete British Insects (Collins 2005) and his Collins Field Guide to Insects and Collins Pocket Guide to Insects are widely acknowledged as the best available.
