Introduction to Solid Mechanics by Irving H Shames
For second or third-year solids courses, and a valuable reference for subsequent coursework in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Material Science. Rather than a rote “cookbook” approach to problem-solving, this book offers a rigorous treatment of the principles behind the practices, asking students to harness their sound foundation of theory when solving problems. A wealth of examples illustrate the meaning of the theory without simply offering recipes or maps for solving similar problems.
Dr. Clive L. Dym is Fletcher Jones Professor of Engineering Design and Director of the Center for Design Education at Harvey Mudd College. His research concerns engineering design and structural mechanics. He holds a PhD from Stanford. Professor Irving Shames received his Ph.D from the University of Maryland in 1953 and held faculty positions at the University of Maryland, Stevens Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, the State University of NewYork at Buffalo, and, most recently, George Washington University.
