Jungle Janes by Peter Burden

At a recent dinner party two bored Army wives challenged their host, Major Ken Hames, that anything he could train men to do, they could do just as well. He took up the challenge and devised an expedition for 12 middle-aged women: a month long trek through Primary Malaysian jungle. This book looks beyond the battles with scorpions, snakes, spiders, and giant hornets and goes further than the harrowing 12 hour treks to question whether the expedition was simply a battle of the sexes, or something far more interesting. Do people benefit from abandoning their daily comfort zones? Do humans grow and develop by going back to the basics of survival in an alien environment? What drives humans-even when contented-to search for self-knowledge? Is removing yourself from social conditioning the best way to grow? For the Janes, the journey was the means, but coming home was not the end.
Peter Burden has had thirteen novels published, some under his own name and others as a ghostwriter for a number of celebrities. Born in 1948 in Surrey, he was educated by the Jesuits at Beaumont College until 1965 when he left to pursue a variety of careers. He founded the cult jeans brand, 'Midnight Blue' in 1975, and 'The Talking Tape' Company, one of the first spoken word tape publishers in 1980. His first novel 'RAGS', based on his experiences in the fashion business, was published in 1987 by Weidenfeld and Nicholson and went on to become a bestseller. He has also written extensively for newspapers and magazines, as well as presenting his own scripts on Radio 4's Afternoon Shift. Peter now lives in Herefordshire with Didi, his wife of twenty years and their three children.
