Jack Halpern is the CEO of the CJK Dictionary Institute in Japan, which is one of the world's leading sources of CJK dictionaries and specializes in the creation of CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) and Arabic lexical databases. Halpern, a lexicographer by trade, spent sixteen years developing the New Japanese-English Character Dictionary, which was published in the United States. NTC/McGraw-Hill published it in 1994. He was the editor-in-chief of many kanji dictionaries for learners as a research fellow at Showa Women's University in Tokyo, and they have since become standard reference works. Halpern has written over twenty books and countless articles, including The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary: Updated and Expanded, which was released in early 2013.
He has given more than 600 public talks on Japanese language and culture, as well as dozens of papers at international conferences. Jack Halpern has spent more than 30 years in Japan. He was born in Germany and has resided in six different countries, including France, Brazil, and the United States. He has studied fifteen languages and is fluent in ten of them.
