L'oeuvre au noir by Marguerite Yourcenar

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Set in sixteenth century Europe, Opus Nigrum/ The Abyss retells the tragic destiny of an exceptional man and makes us live again through the fascinating time that spans from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

Opus Nigrum / The Abyss, an old alchemic formula for the Masterpiece which also symbolizes the evidence of the spirit in its process of liberation, is the title selected by Marguerite Yourcenar to outline the life of Zenon, a character inspired by the German chemist Paracelso, the Spanish doctor Miguel Servet, the Italian philosopher Tommaso Campanella, and Leonardo da Vinci.

Marguerite Yourcenar (1903-87) was a playwright, storyteller, poet, and novelist best known for her work Memoirs of Hadrian. She was the first female member of the Academie Francaise.
