Mary Elizabeth Braddon was born in Soho, London, in 1835. She was an extremely prolific writer, publishing almost ninety books during her long career. Lady Audley's Secret (1862) won her recognition, established her as one of the most successful writers of her time, and continues to be a popular classic. Braddon died in 1915. Robert Giddings is a literary critic and broadcaster who regularly writes for publications including the Tribune and the Dickensian. He is the author of A Student's Guide to Charles Dickens, and co-author with Keith Selby of The Classic Serial on Television and Radio.
