The Land Where I Belong by Mary C Carmichael
Duncan Macpherson (1882-1966), a pharmacist at Kyle of Lochalsh, created a vast photographic record of Highland life. His collection is little known outside the area, but yet must rank as one of the most significant photographic archives in the country. This book reproduces some of the best images from the collection.
Mary Carmichael was brought up in both Tanzania, East Africa, where her father was engaged in Environmental Conservation, botanical survey and collection, and Edinburgh, where she completed her education at Edinburgh University. Between 1996 and 2005 she became Museums and Heritage Officer for Skye and Lochalsh Area, and it was during this time that she became familiar with the Duncan Macpherson photographic and pharmacy collections and met Mary, his daughter. In 1993 she curated a major touring exhibition of his work which opened in Skye and toured to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, Canada in 2003. She lives on the Isle of Skye.
