Life by Drowning by Jeni Couzyn

Jeni Couzyn's early collections Flying, Monkeys' Wedding and Christmas in Africa established her as a poet of great originality. Poems set in her native Africa or in the jungle of modern sexual relationships were widely praised as 'powerful', 'disturbing', 'authentic' and 'relevant'. Jeni Couzyn is now a major voice in modern poetry. The new poems included in Life by Drowning are her most imaginative and spiritually profound.
Jeni Couzyn's poetry is natural and unique, It has read simplicity, the sort that makes every word electric, and gives everything a weird music, without a false noteHer deadpan accounts of horrors come as unforced and true as her plainsongs of love. -- Ted Hughes
In this tough-minded, angry, generous, tender book we see the stretch of a woman's mind over the territory of our collective lives and the account is chastening, exhilarating, and deeply moving. -- Rosemary Sullivan * Canadian Forum *
Jeni Couzyn was born in South Africa in 1942. She grew up in Johannesburg, and read English and Drama at the University of Natal. In 1965 she emigrated to Britain. From 1975 to 1978 she lived in Canada, where she published three books and became a Canadian citizen. She now lives between London and South Africa. Her first book of poems, Flying, appeared from Workshop Press in 1970, and was followed by several other books, including Monkeys' Wedding (Cape, 1972; Heinemann, 1978), Christmas in Africa (Heinemann, 1975), House of Changes (Heinemann, 1978), Life by Drowning: Selected Poems (Bloodaxe Books, 1985) and In the Skin House (Bloodaxe Books, 1993). She edited The Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Women Poets, published by Bloodaxe Books in 1985.
