After a four-year stay in the United States, Sharon relocated to Arizona in 1981. She learned electronics in the Navy and traveled halfway around the world on the USS Enterprise. Jason, a repair ship and the first Naval vessel to transport a group of women on a six-month WestPac tour. She was the first enlisted female to stand shore patrol in the Philippines during her tour, and she was the first female DJ to be heard on the Armed Forces Radio Station airwaves emanating from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean as the Saturday morning FM Rock Jock. Sharon Skinner has a master's degree.

She formerly worked as the Executive Editor of Anthology magazine, a small press literary publication based in Mesa, Arizona, for eight years. Sharon is a member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) and the SCBWI AZ Assistant Regional Advisor.
