Mandela! Struggle & Triumph by David Turnley
Nelson Mandela is an icon of the international struggle for freedom and equality, whose importance on the world's stage rivals Martin Luther King's and Mahatma Gandhi's. This title tells in words and photographs the story of the movement for civil rights since the American Civil Rights Movement, through the eyes of its leader, Nelson Mandela.
Photographer David Turnley has documented most of the major world events of the past twenty-five years. He has travelled in seventy five countries, focusing his lens on the terrors of Beirut, Beijing's Tiananmen Square, the West Bank, South Africa, Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Chechnya and Iraq. Turnley won the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for photography when he was a staff photographer for the Detroit Free Press. His first film work, The Dalai Lama: At Home in Exile, produced for CNN, was awarded the 2001 Cine Golden Eagle and nominated for an Emmy. His documentary La Tropical, about a Cuban dance hall in Havanna, recently opened in theatres and won best documentary in the Miami International Film Festival. He lives in New York City, USA.
