'They told me to write about the things that I know, so that is what I have done. In this book, I celebrate and reflect upon my own experiences and the people and places intimately connected to this lifelong voyage of discovery. Because I also came across pure imagination on the way, there may be some pieces of work where, however hard you try, you will recognise no person, living or departed, nor place identifiable on a satnav. However there will probably be elements that, should we be acquainted, will remind you of me.'
Sandy Kealty descended on the Dimbola At Homes exotically dressed, and a wonderful reciter of her pin sharp, comic and wise poetic diatribes of contemporary lifeShe is the poetic equivalent of a great cartoonist, eschewing jargon and pomposity, always with a funny but wise punch line, and particularly gifted at setting out a verbal picture that lingers in the mind long after the poem has ended. Yes, she is very taken with runner beans and dust, with clothes and memories and the joys and pitfalls of retirement. And in full control of rhyme and meter. But in print, the poems reveal great depth, indeed The Mermaid is Unimpressed revealed beside elements of fantasy and legend a personal history and a vein of melancholy and sadness. Sandy promised that her next collection would deal with caution, and motorbikes, and hip-hop, and now here it is. Kealty, Sandy: - Sandy's writing is aimed at performance, and now she thought it time to commit some work to the page. She started performing seriously in Whitstable in the mid nineties, having been left alone on a cliff top with very little warning, and has continued in the same vein since moving to the Isle of Wight, a place which has proved a joy and an inspiration to her. Sandy has appeared many times at Island venues, as a poet and as a community musician. Truly international, Sandy has read her poems far and wide including the Isle of Wight Literary Festival and Ventnor Fringe, to aerospace engineers in San Diego, and at a poetry cafü¾Ž–”¼ in Santa Rosa.
