She was the first enlisted female to stand shore patrol in the Philippines during her tour, and she was the first female DJ to be heard on the Armed Forces Radio Station airwaves emanating from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean as the Saturday morning FM Rock Jock. Sharon Skinner has a master's degree.

She formerly worked as the Executive Editor of Anthology magazine, a small press literary publication based in Mesa, Arizona, for eight years. Sharon is a member of SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) and the SCBWI AZ Assistant Regional Advisor.
