Mathew Gnagy began his tailoring career as an apprentice at a suit store when he was 17 years old. His fascination in historical garments prompted him to research tailoring throughout history. He had designed theater shows, countless individual costumes for private clients, and launched his own costume business by the time he was 25 years old. He relocated to New York City with 2007 and began working in the professional costume sector as well as fashion, soon making his way to Broadway, television, and fashion runways. Knitting Off the Axis, his debut book, was published by Interweave Press in 2011.
His new book, The Modern Maker, is his second. He is now based in New York City. He is a regular tailor for both screen and stage, as well as a fashion instructor at Parsons University of Fashion Design.
