Monsieur Pamplemousse and the Secret Mission by Michael Bond

When the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad finally reached San Antonio in 1877, South Texas boomed. Soon seven more came through: the International and Great Northern/Missouri Pacific, San Antonio and Aransas Pass, San Antonio and Gulf Shore, Missouri-Kansas-Texas, Artesian Belt/San Antonio Southern plus Amtrak and the Union Pacific. Separate chapters summarize the story of each railroad. Five appendices codify data, from an index of towns and railroads serving them to a listing of surviving depots.

Michael Bond was born in the town of Newbury in the year 1926. A Bear Named Paddington, his debut children's book, was published in 1958. In 1983, he began writing adult fiction, with Monsieur Pamplemousse and his loyal bloodhound, Pommes Frites, as the protagonists. In June 2017, he unfortunately passed away.
