A Mother's Promise by Rachel Wesson

Germany, 1942: Trudi traces the image of little Liesel sitting on the blanket; her huge, chubby-cheeked smile. She kisses the wrinkled photograph and closes her eyes as she promises: I will survive. No matter what, I will hold you again, my darling girl.

Her heart torn in two after sending her children on the Kindertransport, young widow Trudi Beck stays in Berlin to face the dangers of war alone. Living in the shadows is desperately hard, but Trudi must survive - her little girl needs her - so she can't afford to take any risks.

Yet as she sees her beloved home torn apart by unimaginable evil, and her heart breaks with grief at the loss of friends and family, Trudi realises she can't stand by any longer. She must fight back against the brutality of the Nazi regime. Trudi gives every ounce of her courage and ingenuity to the Resistance, where she meets Jakob, who teaches her how to lie and save innocent lives. But even Jakob can't quell the surge of guilt she feels with every risk she takes.

And just when it seems like the Allies are gaining ground and victory is within reach, Trudi realises she's taken one chance too many; she's arrested and her captors intend to make her pay. Can Trudi survive without betraying the brave fighters of the Resistance? Will she ever see her little girl again?

An absolutely unputdownable historical novel for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Choice, and The Girl With No Name. A stunning, unforgettable story about the power of a mother's love and the will to survive against all the odds.

This can be read as a standalone novel, though it's part of the Hearts at War series.

Rachel Wesson is the author of several bestselling series including her latest based on the Orphan Trains. Having always been a fan of history, Rachel tries to combine her love of history with a good story.

While born in Kilkenny, Ireland, Rachel considers herself to be from the capital, Dublin, as that's where she spent most of her life. She grew up driving everyone nuts asking them questions about what they did during the War or what side they were on in the 1916 rising etc. Finally her Granny told her to write her stories down so people would get the pleasure of reading them.

Now Rachel lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When not reading, writing or watching films for research purposes, Rachel likes to hang out with her family. She also travels regularly back home to Ireland.
