The emphasis is on the structure of the nervous system, the correlation of structure and function, and the principles relevant to the practice of medicine.The George B. Purves is Dale Purves. Geller Professor of Neurobiology Emeritus at the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, where he continues to work as a Research Professor with additional affiliations at Duke University's departments of Psychology and Brain Sciences and Philosophy. Following the completion of a B.A. M.D. from Yale University He joined the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 1973 after receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard and subsequent postdoctoral training at Harvard and University College London.
He became the founding chair of Duke Medical Institute's Department of Neurobiology in 1990, and then the Director of Duke's Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. He was also the head of the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School's Brain and Behavioral Disorders Program in Singapore. Purves' research over the last 20 years has aimed to explain visual and auditory perception in the context of music. He is best recognized for his work on neural development and synaptic plasticity. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has written, co-authored, or edited 18 books on neuroscience.
