Michelle Cliff is the author of three critically acclaimed novels: Abeng, No Telephone to Heaven, and Free Enterprise (Plume). She was born in Jamaica. She has also published two poetry collections, The Land of Look Behind and Claiming an Identity They Taught Me to Despise, as well as a collection of short tales, Bodies of Water (Plume). Allan K. is her name. Smith is a Trinity College professor of English Language and Literature who splits her time between Hartford, Connecticut, and Santa Cruz, California.
