Hirsh shared the Overseas Press Club prize for best magazine reporting from abroad in 2001, for recognizing the al Qaeda danger half a year before September 11 and for Newsweek's coverage of the war on terror, which also earned a National Magazine Award. He currently resides in Washington, D.C.
