In the OXFORD REFERENCE series, the second edition of this dictionary lists around 2,000 words and phrases prominent in the media or the public eye in the 1980s and 1990s. Each entry contains the meaning of the word, illustrated by quotations, the date of the earliest recorded usage, and the circumstances in which the word entered popular usage.The Oxford Dictionary of Quotes' Editor, Elizabeth Knowles, is a historical lexicographer who worked on the 4th edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. What They Didn't Say: A Book of Misquotations (2006) and How to Interpret a Word (2010) are two of her other editing credits. She contributed to Oxford University Press's History, and she is currently working for Oxford University Press on a study of quotations in the English language.
