Past Hysteric by Berwick Coates

Here is a History teachers tribute to error - the error which defies correction, the error which has a logic of its own, the error which often deserves to be right far more than the truth does. Which port in Spain did the Armada sail from? El Cid What was a toga? A rape-around robe What does the name 'Christ' mean? Something has gone wrong Why was England dull under Cromwell? He closed the cinemas Where was Hitler born? Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk What did men use to build the prehistoric huts on Dartmoor? Their hands.
Coates, Berwick: - Berwick Coates was educated at Kingston Grammar School, and read History at Christ's College, Cambridge. Since then, he has been, as the mood took him, an army officer, author, artist, lecturer, careers adviser, games coach, wince-making (and self-deluding) performer on the banjolele, and teacher of History, English, Latin, General Studies, and Swahili. He has published thirteen books, including two historical novels with Simon and Schuster. He lives in Devon, where he is (still) the Archivist of West Buckland School.
