Practical UNIX Security by Simson Garfinkel

This volume tells system administrators how to make their UNIX system - either System V or BSD - as secure as it possibly can be without going to trusted system technology. The book describes UNIX concepts and how they enforce security, tells how to defend against and handle security breaches, and explains network security (including UUCP, NFS, Kerberos, and firewall machines) in detail.

Simson Garfinkel is a Naval Postgraduate School Associate Professor. Garfinkel's research interests include digital forensics, usable security, data fusion, information policy, and terrorism. He is based in Arlington, Virginia. He has seven US patents and has hundreds of academic articles on security and digital forensics to his credit. Vineyard, which supplied Internet connection on Martha's Vineyard from 1995 until 2005, and Sandstorm Enterprises, an early developer of commercial computer forensic tools, are two of Garfinkel's five businesses. Garfinkel graduated from MIT with three Bachelor of Science degrees in 1987, a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University in 1988, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1990.
