Rebels by Gascoigne Russell
Tom and Rab knew when they joined Parliament's rebel army that life would be tough. But the real danger begins when they are ordered to help Captain Hyde with his secret mission: to find a holy relic said to bestow supernatural powers on its owner. In an England ripped apart by civil war, the two friends follow the trail.
Russell Gascoigne is a scriptwriter whose credits include the top-rating A Touch of Frost Rebels is his first book for children. He lives in Cardiff. He says of it, "For a long time I wanted to write an adventure story with a strong plot and plenty of cliff-hangers - sort of a Tom Sawyer/ Huckleberry Finn meets Indiana Jones. Then I became interested in the Spear of Destiny - a real holy relic - and the story grew from there." Russell lives in Cardiff with his wife and two boys, who were his guinea pigs for Rebels - he would read them bits as they were written and if his sons approved, he knew it was good!
