The Riddle and the Knight by Giles Milton
In 1322 Mandeville left England on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, returning 34 years later claiming to have travelled half-way round the world. His account of this - "The Travels"- was a popular and influential book. Yet in the 19th century scholars discredited it, claiming it was an elaborate fabrication. Milton sifts the facts from the fantasy.
He specializes on the history of travel and exploration, and has written pieces to most of the British national newspapers as well as numerous overseas media. He has traveled widely across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas as part of his studies. He is the author of four nonfiction works, including the best-selling Nathaniel's Nutmeg, which has been translated into fifteen languages around the world. Nose is Edward Trencom's first novel.
