Riddle of the Seven Realms by Lyndon M Hardy

The worst of the mess they were in, Kestrel knew, was that it was all his own fault. It all began when he had tried to cheat the lady wizard Phoebe with a load of worthless wood. When she insisted on testing his sample, the demon Astron had burst through the flame.

Lyndon Hardy (1941- ) is an author, prankster, and grandpa who grew interested in fantasy while at Caltech, roaming through the edges of fandom. He displays intermittent bursts of interest for stamp collecting and playing cards in addition to reading and writing. He hasn't yet come up with a plot for a stamp collector who saves the world. In 1960, while at CalTech, he devised and directed the Rose Bowl Card Stunt Caper, which has been dubbed the best collegiate prank ever. In Torrance, California, he lives with his wife, Joan.

They have two daughters and four living grandchildren between them. Lyndon Hardy was born in Los Angeles and has spent his whole life there, with the exception of a few years spent in Texas as a child. He graduated from the California Institute of Technology with a BS in Physics in 1962 and the University of California at Berkeley with a PhD in Physics in 1966. He spent 30 years with TRW, where he assisted in the development of satellite ground station software.

He cofounded Alodar Systems, a software consulting firm specialized in business processes, ERP solutions, and application integration, after retiring from aerospace. He left the organization in 2016 and began a new full-time writing career.
