Roman Buckles and Military Fittings by Andrew Appels
Documents and identifies most of the items of military kit encountered by metal detectorists and archaeologists, and sets them in their historical and military context.
Andrew Appels became interested in ancient cultures whilst at school and living only a short distance from Lincoln and York it seemed only natural that he should take more than a keen interest in Roman culture. This subsequently led to a 30 year passion for collecting and studying antiquities and for the last 10 years a specialisation in Roman Military artefacts. Andy is a Validator/Finds Advisor on UKDFD, an internet project to promote a recording ethos within the metal detecting community and provide a resource for identification and research of items recovered.Stuart Laycock studied Classics at Jesus College, Cambridge, before a career in advertisind and the media. During hte wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, he did relief work with a medical aid charity. He has had a long term interest in late Roman Britain and the end of the Roman period. He has been collecting and studying late Roman military buckles and fittings for 4 years, and has had a number of articles published on the subject. He is married with two children.
