The Royal Way of the Cross by Francois De Salignac De La Mot Fenelon

Lorraine Kaul's book of poetry, Dandelions Don't Need to Roar and Other Poems, is a celebration and a tribute for her mother, Charlotte Kaul. After reading the 41 verses that extol the compassion and love Lorraine holds for her momma, I felt full of warmth and admiration for this daughter who used poetry to formally tell her mother how special she is. Sometimes, Lorraine's writing voices tragedy, other times a sense of pride, most times a feeling of joy, but always beautiful and uplifting. Her occasional use of words indigenous to the 'hollows' of West Virginia where Lorraine was raised gives a special human quality to those poems. But it's the sincere and honest expression of her love most readers will enjoy and relate to, reminding them of their own close relationships with their mothers. I look forward to more books of her poetry. I am sure they also will be filled with new expressions of love.

---Marie Fenton Griffing: writer/editor and the author of three recent books of poetry, Sunflowers Do Die, To Be a Child Again, and From Then to Now. Her long career spans the media fields of newspaper editor and reporter, The Los Angeles Times and The Rockland Journal News, magazine editing, 'Teen, Good Housekeeping and Cosmopolitan magazines, book publishing, author of a dozen self-help books.

Fenelon, Francois: - Francois de Salignac de la Mothe Fnelon (1651-1715) was a French archbishop, theologian, and writer whose excursions into the contemplative life, especially the quietism espoused by Mme. Guyon, caused controversy in the church of his day. His writings remain, though, as an encouragement and source of spiritual growth for many Christians today. Fnelon, descended from a long line of nobility, started his higher studies in 1672 at Saint-Sulpice seminary in Paris. He was ordained a priest in 1676 and appointed director of Nouvelles Catholiques (New Cathoics), a college for women who taught converts from French Protestantism. Fnelon, while never supportive of Protestantism, was nonetheless critical of harsh treatment toward Hugeunots (French Protestants) and the many forced conversions that occurred under King Louis XIV. Fnelon instead held open meetings with Protestants to share the Catholic doctrine in a non-threatening environment. Fnelon's first important work, Traite de l'education des filles (Treatise on the Education of Girls), was conservative overall but also suggested non-coercive concepts for educating females that were very innovative for his day. His second and best-known work, Les Aventures de Telemaque (The Adventures of Telemachus), outlined Fnelon's political beliefs through the account of Telemachus's search for Ulysses. It was written during Fnelon's time as tutor to Louis, Duke de Bourgogne, the grandson and heir to Louis XIV.
