Dave Newman has written seven books, the most recent of which being East Pittsburgh Downlow (J. New Books, 2019), the novella Sammy Drinks Canned Beer (White Gorilla Press, 2020), The Poem Factory (White Gorilla Press, 2015), the novels Raymond Carver Will Not Raise Our Children (Writers Tribe Books, 2012), Two Little Birds (Writers Tribe Books, 2014), Please Don't Kill Anyone Tonight (World Parade, 2010), and the collection The Slaughterhouse Poems (White Gorilla Press, 2013), and the collection The Slaughterhouse Gulf Stream, Vol. 1, published his stories, essays, and reviews. 1 Brooklyn, Belt, the venerable Nerve Cowboy, Smokelong Quarterly, Ambit (UK), Tears in the Fence (UK), The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and a slew of other publications have published his work. He was included in a PBS documentary about Pittsburgh writers hosted by Rick Sebak.
He resides in Trafford, PA, the final village in the Electric Valley, with his wife, the writer Lori Jakiela, and their two daughters. He has won various honors, including the Andre Dubus Novella Award. He works in medical research and cares for the elderly.
