Sarong Secrets by Su Kim Lee

Think belachan is all that is spicy about our bibiks? Second collection of short stories that will offer greater insight into the unique culture of the Peranakans
For nearly 20 years, Lee Su Kim has been writing about Malaysia's folkways, enlightening readers with tidbits of Malaysian Flavours, the title of her first bookShe grew up in a world of sarongs ... colourful, crisp sarongs, starched till they could function as changing rooms when left to stand on their own...Whether Malaysian or foreigner, Lee's writings in Sarong Secrets, as in her previous Kebaya Tales, afford a delightful portrayal of peranakan men, women and children in their daily lives. Because she brings us in so close, we share the feelings and emotions, the laughter and the tears, of everyday people. Sarong Secrets is an insider's view of a facet of Malaysian society. --Allen Wittenborn is an author and former professor of History and Asian Studies who divides his time between San Diego, California and Southeast Asia, contributor The New Straits Times
