Scorched by Wajdi Mouawad

A haunting, poetic play from one of Canada's leading playwrights, Scorched is a powerful investigation of trauma and family ties. It was adapted into an Oscar-nominated film, Incendies (2010), under its original French title.

A mother falls into complete silence. Upon her death, her twin children Janine and Simon are asked to uproot the source of that silence. They must find the father they never knew, and the brother they never knew they had. Their journey begins in Montreal but the answers lie in the rubble of a war-torn desert.

Wajdi Mouawad's play Scorched is a beautifully written story about a mother's unspeakable pain.

It is published, in this English translation by Linda Gaboriau, by Playwrights Canada Press.

WAJDI MAUAWAD has worked as an actor and director, and his original plays have become a central element in many theatres across Quebec. Mouawad was the winner of the Governor General's Literary Award in 2000, and was named Artistic Director of the National Arts Centre French Theatre in 2007.
