The Selected Melanie Klein by Juliet Mitchell
Through her work with young children, Melanie Klein developed her theories about the earliest processes of emotional development. These developments preceding Freud's Oedipus Complex were discovered by Klein using her revolutionary 'play technique' and are at the heart of her analysis. Her work explains how a baby's failure to come to terms with its ambivalent feelings towards its mother can lead to depression in later life. Klein's work remains controversial but is deeply rewarding.
Juliet Mitchell is a psychoanalyst and academic. She lectures in Gender and Society at Cambridge University and is a Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge. She has one daughter and lives in London and Cambridge.
