She is the author of two prior works of nonfiction, the New York Times bestseller Self-Made Man: One Woman's Year Disguised as a Man and Voluntary Madness: Lost and Found in the Mental Health-Care System, which she wrote as an op-ed columnist for the Los Angeles Times. She currently resides in New York City.
