I was 18 years old, had recently graduated from high school, and had taken a job in an insurance business in London. I was inside a building, in an office! I was running late one morning, so I took a shortcut through the churchyard to get to the train station in time. I'd just finished reading The Sun Also Rises the night before, and as I stood there gazing at all these gravestones, I remember thinking to myself, Wow, we're not going to be here for long. Make the most of it.
So I returned home and informed my mum that I would be quitting my job and traveling to Morocco. She was on the verge of passing out. Colin hitchhiked via Europe to Sweden after traveling through Spain and Africa to see a girlfriend he'd met on a football trip the year before. He was still restless when he eventually returned home.
He journeyed around Asia after failing to make the cut as a professional football player; his experiences in Bangkok and India subsequently inspired his thriller VENOM, and his exploits in the jungles of Burma and Laos later became the premise of his OPIUM series about the underworld drug trade.
