He holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and cultural history and is a former Fulbright fellow. a graduate of the University of Chicago His expertise and museological work have been honored by the International Council of Museums, UNESCO, and Harvard's Peabody Museum. He is the author of numerous publications, including Hope Diamond: The Remarkable History of a Cursed Gem. He is a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the White House Historical Association, and numerous other boards, and has been awarded the Smithsonian Secretary's Gold Medal for Outstanding Service.
