The Story of Poetry by Michael Schmidt

In this wonderfully entertaining and instructive book Michael Schmidt gives us a history of English poetry from 1500 to 1700. The book divides into two halves - the first is a history of the poets' lives, the times during which they were writing, and an account of their works; and the second is an anthology of the poetry itself. Schmidt shows how language and the poetic imagination are shaped by politics and history, and never more so than during the period of the Renaissance to the Restoration . This is an invaluable book for all readers of poetry and students who will find no other competing volume available. This is the second book in a major four-volume project which will provide the most comprehensive history of English poetry.
The second volume of Michael Schmidt's STORY OF POETRY was published on 10 October, to coincide with National Poetry DayWe had a launch event for him in Watertsones, Deansgate on Friday 11th October. Michael did a big interview on BBC Radio Norfolk on National Poetry Day We're hoping to get some great reviews, and already confirmed are reviews in the Times, Independent on Sunday and Literary Review (December issue). 'British poetry owes a great debt of gratitude to Michael Schmidt...We see the personal passion driving Schmidt's own career. He cares intensely about bringing poetry to a wider audience. And with this volume, he brilliantly succeeds.'Ruth Padel, Financial Times 'Schmidt's 200-page commentary, which serves as a preface to the anthology, is (as before) forceful and...peppered with crisp, sound judgements...Schmidt keeps us aware not only of the craft of poetry, but of the messy and often unjust business of publishing and selling it too. This is both refreshing and enlightening.'Michael Glover, Independent 'Very readable...[it] widens your understanding and deepens your appreciation of the poetry of the time...Fascinating.'Writing Magazine 'An ingenious arrangement which serves the reader well.'Contem
