The Stowaway by Karen Hesse

In 1767, 11-year-old Nicholas Young stowed away on Captain James Cook's Endeavour. Cook's three-year mission was secret: He was charged by the British Navy to search for a lost continent, believed to be located between the southern tip of South America and New Zealand. Nick's journal charts the voyage, with every port of call a new adventure. He befriends a native of Tahiti, taken aboard the Endeavour, is enlisted as an Able Seaman, and becomes the surgeon';s assistant. Here is one of the great voyages of discovery seen through the eyes of a boy who was actually there.

Karen Hesse is the author of numerous books for children, including the Newbery Medal-winning Out of the Dust, Letters from Rifka, Phoenix Rising, Sable and Lavender. She has won awards such as the Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Prize, the Christopher Award, and the MacArthur Fellowship Genius Award, making her only the second children's book author to earn this accolade. Hesse was born in Baltimore and attended the University of Maryland. Her spouse Randy and she live in Vermont.
