Alexis de Tocqueville born of aristocratic parents shortly after the French Revolution, was to become the first great European Liberal. This biography charts his concern with the need of all citizens to participate in the organization of their lives.
Larry Siedentop is a faculty lecturer in political thought at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Keble College. He is also the author of Tocqueville.
