Roger Pulvers is a playwright, director of theater, translator, and filmmaker. In Japanese and English, he has published over fifty works, including novels, essays, plays, and poetry. Lawrence drew him back to Japan and inspired him to become the award-winning writer, film director, and prolific novelist he is today while working as an assistant to director Nagisa Oshima on Happy Christmas. His novel, Hoshizuna Monogatari (Star Sand), was first published in Japanese in 2015 by Kodansha, Japan's largest publisher, and then translated into English and French in 2016 and 2017. It was adapted into a film in 2017, which he directed. His most recent novels are Liv, a novel, and The Unmaking of an American, an autobiography, both published by Balestier Press.
