The Triple Point of Water by Fiona Dunscombe

Growing up in rural Nottinghamshire, Arabella Cordon sees life through a filter of fairytales. She idolises her father, but his enthusiasm is reserved for steam engines, motorcycles and Margaret Thatcher. On the day Thatcher comes to power, Arabella's life changes irrevocably. Alone and adrift in London, she takes a job as a striptease artist in Soho and makes friends with Saf, who is searching for her lost father amongst the city's homeless. Unlike Saf, Arabella is determined to leave the past behind, but she is haunted by the ghosts of fathers - missing fathers, pseudo fathers, fantasy fathers. In the icy years presided over by Britain's first female prime minister, Arabella's own identity and survival are inextricably linked to the question of what a father is.
Fiona Dunscombe was born in Derbyshire. She moved to London where she worked as a dancer and later in PR and recruitment. She has also taught creative writing. In 2002 she began writing The Triple Point of Water, drawing on her experiences of working in Soho during the 1980s. In 2006 she was shortlisted for the Cinnamon Press Novel Award for unpublished novels. She has also written drama for radio and her plays have been shortlisted for and awarded prizes at two London Radio Playwrights Festivals. She now lives in southern France with her husband and her son. The Triple Point of Water is Fiona's first novel.
