Uncovering Student Ideas in Science, Volume 4, offers 25 more formative assessment probes to help reveal students' preconceptions of fundamental concepts in science, bringing the total to 100 probes for the popular series by author Page Keeley. Teachers of grades K-12 will find short probes with grade-band specifics that provide easy-to-follow suggestions for addressing students' ideas by promoting learning through conceptual-change instruction. Volume 4 adds to the probes in physical, life, and Earth and space science with a new category called unifying principles. Also covered is a discussion on balancing formative assessment with summative assessment.

For nearly 20 years, PAGE KEELEY has been a pioneer in science education. She left the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) in 2012 as Senior Science Program Director, where she had worked since 1996. She now works as an independent consultant, lecturer, and author, delivering professional development in the fields of formative assessment and teaching for conceptual comprehension to school systems and businesses. Page has served as the lead investigator and project director for three National Science Foundation-funded projects: the Northern New England Co-Mentoring Network (NNECN), PRISMS- Phenomena and Representations for Middle School Science Teaching, and Curriculum Topic Study- A Systematic Method to Using National Standards and Cognitive Research. She also designed and directed state MSP programs such as Science Content, Conceptual Change, and Collaboration (SC4) and TIES K-12- Teachers Integrating Engineering into Science K-12, as well as two National Semiconductor Foundation awards, Connecting Science, Inquiry, and Language Literacy (L-SILL) and Linking Science, Engineering, and Language Literacy (L-SELL), and two National Semiconductor Foundation grants, Linking Science, Engineering, and Language Literacy (L-SELL).

She founded and directed the Maine Governor's Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership, a replication of the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership, of which she is a Fellow. Page has written over twenty best-selling and award-winning publications, including twelve in the Uncovering Student Ideas in Science series, four in the first edition Curriculum Topic Study series, and four in the Science and Mathematics Formative Assessment- Practical Methods for Connecting Assessment, Teaching, and Learning series. Some of her publications have won important educational publishing prizes. She's written a number of journal papers and contributed to a number of book chapters.

She is a frequent speaker on the topics of formative assessment in science, comprehension students' (and instructors') thinking, and teaching for conceptual understanding at regional, national, and worldwide conferences. Page taught middle and high school science for 15 years before leaving to work at the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance in 1996. She was an active teacher leader at the time, serving two years as President of the Maine Science Teachers Association and NSTA District II Director from 1995 to 1998, as well as a member of the NSTA Executive Board (prior to the Board and Council restructuring in 1997). In 1992, she was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Science Teaching, and in 1993, she was honored with the Milken National Distinguished Educator Award.

Her leadership and professional development work has been widely recognized since she left the classroom in 1996. She was elected President of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) for the 63rd time in 2008, the world's biggest association of K-12, university, and informal science educators. Susan Loucks-Horsley Prize for Leadership in Science and Mathematics Professional Development was given to her by the National Staff Development Council (formerly Learning Forward) in 2009. She was awarded the Outstanding Leadership in Science Education award by the National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA) in 2013 and the Distinguished Service to Science Education Award by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) in 2018.

She was a Cohort 1 Fellow in the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership, a science literacy leader for the AAAS/Project 2061 Professional Development Program, and a member of numerous national advisory boards. She has led science/STEM education delegations to South Africa (2009), China (2010), India (2012), Cuba (2014), Iceland (2017), Panama (2018), and Costa Rica (2019) because she is passionate about global science education. Before to becoming a teacher, Page worked as a research assistant at the Jackson Laboratory of Mammalian Genetics in Bar Harbor, Maine, with immunogeneticist Dr. Leonard Schultz. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in science.

She received her bachelor's degree in Life Sciences/pre-veterinary studies from the University of New Hampshire and her master's degree in Science Education from the University of Maine. She enjoys traveling, reading, photography, fiber work, and dabbles in modernist cooking and culinary art in her leisure time. Page has lived in Maine for for 40 years, and she and her husband now split their time between Fort Myers, Florida, and Wickford, Rhode Island.
