Jean Charles Emmanuel Nodier wurde am 29.04.1780 in Besançon geboren; er starb am 27.01.1844 in Paris.Nodier erhielt als Sohn eines Advokaten eine gute Ausbildung und war in seiner Heimatstadt früh politisch engagiert. 1804 kam er wegen eines satirischen Gedichts gegen Napoleon kurz ins Gefängnis. 1812 wurde er dennoch kaiserlicher Bibliothekar in Laibach (Ljubljana). Ab 1815 arbeitete er in Paris als Journalist. 1821 reiste er nach Schottland, wo er auchWalter Scotttraf. Ab 1824 war er Leiter der Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. Er unterhielt in seiner Dienstwohnung einen literarischen Salon, in demVigny, MussetundHugoverkehrten.
