Young Cassie McGregor flees to Dundee with her stepmother Phoebe after her abusive father has killed her husband and baby. There she meets Bertram Dickson, son of the owner of the mill where she and Phoebe work. Cassie and Bertram eventually marry and have a baby son.Doris Davidson is a retired primary school teacher who still lives in her native city of Aberdeen. She has been writing novels since 1984 and the first to be published was ‘The Brow of Gallowgate’ in 1990. Her married daughter is a civil servant and lives in Surrey, but her son, an art teacher, also lives in Aberdeen, and presented her with a grandson in 1987.
