Throughout the 1970s, Howard Cruse (1944-2019) began his career as an underground cartoonist in underground comix, and in 1980, he became the founding editor of the revolutionary Gay Comix series. Throughout the 1980s, his comic strip Wendel was serialized in The Advocate. In the United States, his most well-known work, Stuck Rubber Baby, won Eisner and Harvey Awards. and a Prix de la critique at the International Comics Festival in Angouleme, France, as well as a Comics Critics Prize in Spain, a Luchs Award in Germany, and a Comics Critics Award in Spain (in translation). In 2017, CXC (Cartoon Crossroads Columbus) presented the graphic novel with a Transformative Work Award. He also contributed amusing illustrations to a number of mainstream publications.
