Richmal Crompton was born in 1890 in Lancashire. In 1919, the first tale of William Brown appeared in Home magazine, and three years later, the first collection of William Brown stories was released in book form. There were 38 William volumes published in total, with the latest one appearing in 1970, after Richmal Crompton's death.
