Windward Anchorages by Chris Doyle

Early in the planning of this Centenary Edition, the editors decided to set aside a final volume for those works of Hawthorne that did not find a place in the previous volumes. Many of these works were written early in Hawthorne's career, going back as far as his precollege years, and from the still hazily understood time of his earliest periodical publications - sometimes pseudonymous, more often anonymous. The Life of Franklin Pierce - which did not belong with the romances, however loud the satirical charges of political opponents that it did - finds its place in this volume, along with the first complete publication of Pierce's Mexican diary, which Hawthorne used in composing his Life.

In the Eastern Caribbean, Chris Doyle's cruise guides are among the most popular. Chris explains this to his customers telling him what they want to see in a guide and then following their suggestions when it makes sense. In this sense, his guides have always been forward-thinking, pioneering color sketch charts, then computerized color sketch charts, GPS waypoints, star charts, and a guide-linked website where visitors can locate corrections, download town maps, access navigational advisories, and find links to down island enterprises. Chris built his dream yacht, a 40-foot catamaran named Ti Kanot, in Trinidad a few years ago. He stays on board for more than half of the year, visiting all of the anchorages he has to update. He spends part of the summer in Vermont, where he lives with his life partner Virginia Barlow.
